In less than six months of full operation, the Institute of Bioinformatics has created a comprehensive Human Protein Reference Database which will serve as a repository of all human proteins discovered.

The initial dataset comprises of almost 3,000 human proteins with plans to complete a total of 10,000 by the end of 2003. This protein centric database will be publicly available shortly. This database will serve as a ready reckoner for both academics and companies in their quest for drug discovery, identification of disease markers and promote biomedical research in general. The uniqueness of this database is its comprehensiveness, manual curation, easy and user friendly retrieval and inclusion of protein interactions and modifications. Currently, no other database in the world provide such wealth of information about proteins.
